Just how HOT is social networking? Consider this – last month facebook had more visitors than Google. It is also the fastest-growing website, having 400 million members of which roughly half are on site daily. How would you like a chance to reach that market? It's not all college kids either – the baby-boomers are jumping onboard in impressive numbers too.
Does Social Network advertising work? Yes…and no. A small ad on facebook got you here after all. BUT…a recent study found 70% of Facebook users who visit the site at least once a month and are a “fan” of at least one company or brand, don’t believe they have given those companies permission to market to them. Moreover, 40% of those “fans” don’t believe marketers are welcome in social networks at all. People visit social networks to communicate with current friends, catch up with old friends, and otherwise express themselves. A full 44% of people who are fans of at least one company or brand on Facebook also say social networks should be used strictly for interpersonal communication. They don’t believe marketers are welcome. To them, self-identification as a fan is not an invitation; it is an expression of personal taste or style intended to be shared primarily with friends.

The message is simple – don’t act like “marketers” when on facebook. It aint cool. “Marketer” has become a derogatory term in the minds of most consumers. Consumers don’t trust marketing. Consumers trust people (or brands) that help them and exhibit interests similar to theirs.

Facebook Marketers’ first inclination is to build a fan base so that they can send those people marketing messages. Even when promoted as “exclusively for our fans,” that approach is similar to other direct-marketing tactics; unless offers are truly unique, consumers are increasingly put off by such offers. So here's what I've got for you. Yeah…here comes the pitch. Am I selling something? Of course. But you're not about to make a purchase – you're about to make an investment. Trust me, the information contained in this $17 ebook “Guerrilla Marketing for Social Networks” is worth a whole lot more than the $17 I'm charging in this test-run and I'll be at least doubling the price after this. In the past few months I've tested various ways of marketing on facebook. And I've spent damn near $1000 in the process. Any PPC advertising campaign can be tricky. There are a lot of variables to consider. It comes down to testing. Testing your keywords, testing copy, testing price and testing your offer. Google Adwords, for instance, can be brutal. Have you tried it? You can quickly run up thousands of dollars without making one sale. And it's getting tougher. PPC advertising on Social Networking sites like facebook is an entirely different beast. It's probably harder to crack than Adwords. For instance, Facebookers have demonstrated they don't want to be sold to. They despise marketers and marketing. When they're online catching up with their friends they don't want advertising to intrude. And facebook itself spells out what kind of ads they want to see on their site –

Advertising Philosophy At Facebook, we believe that every part of our site, including the ads, should contribute to and be consistent with the overall user experience. Thus, we are committed to protecting our user experience by keeping the site clean, consistent, and free from intrusive advertising. We believe that we can help transform existing advertising into messages which are tailored to the individual user based on how their friends interact and affiliate with the brands, music artists, and businesses they care about.

So it's a whole new ballgame. But it can be done. And it can be cost-effective.

STOPPRESS: Hold the front page! I've decided not to charge you for this book. If you're one of the first 50 to respond, that is. Just enter your details into the opt-in down the bottom of this post and I'll send it to you for FREE.
